Haverstraw is a quiet cove whose name is derived from the Dutch word Haverstroo. The name refers to the grassy areas near the river, as the name literally means ‘oats straw’. The town exists to the west of the Hudson River, and it is north of Clarkstown and south of the Town of Stony Point. It is the most densely populated area in northern Rockland County, and it has a thriving business district, historical landmarks, and natural parks for those who love the outdoors.

Haverstraw has 33,811 residents residing in 11,225 households. 8,328 families live in the town, and 1,508 people live in each square mile per hour. Haverstraw contains 11,553 housing units.
